The clatter of hammers on metal, the creak of spinning wheels, the rattle of picks breaking stones—artisans’ workshops have always been a noisy neighborhood. That is why in Central Asian cities in the Middle Ages, the rabaḍs, the commercial and industrial areas, were moved away from the centre of the city (shahristan) to outside the city walls.
