Jochi (Tushi, Jüchi)
Heir to Chinggis Khan, Ruler of the Ulus of Jochi
Jochi was Chinggis Khan’s eldest son with his main and first wife Börte. Even during his father’s lifetime, Jochi proved to be a talented commander and skilled administrator who brought a considerable part of the Horde’s lands under his father’s control.
Jochi’s history, however, had a dark spot: his brother Chagatai actively supported rumors that Jochi was not the Great Khan’s biological son, having been born after Börte’s imprisonment by the Merkit tribe. Chinggis Khan himself did not seem to care: it is believed that he wanted Jochi to inherit the entire empire, but he also realized how difficult it would be for his son to remain in power. While Jochi got the lion’s share of the empire, it was still only a part. The Ulus of Jochi was later called the Golden Horde.
