About Grotesque Love
There is a type of love, love as a feeling, one of the two main types of love (the other being love as a dependency), which is completely impersonal. It captures the person, attaching them to a sometimes completely grotesque object. If this type of love is unrequited, there is no need to punish oneself. Suffer it and let the realization of its grotesqueness aid its departure.
Susan Sontag (1933–2004) was an American poet, critic, philosopher, and one of the foremost public intellectuals of the twentieth century.
