The Amish are a religious community living primarily in Pennsylvania and other parts of the northeastern United States. They consciously halted progress in their society in the 18th century and adamantly reject later advancements of civilization.

The Amish travel by horse and buggy, wear traditional clothing, typically abstain from using electricity, engage in organic farming, and essentially represent a living museum exhibit. The Amish values of peacefulness and hard work have become the subject of proverbs, which are often perceived as amusing nonsense.

Occasionally, events within their communities spark protests from advocates of civil rights. However, overall, the Amish are loved and respected in America. People eagerly purchase their farm products, handmade furniture crafted by Amish men, and patchwork quilts made by the women of the community during winter time.

Patchwork quilting and Amish quilts are synonymous and it represents the canon of patchwork quilting. This craft, which originated from the impoverished endeavors of the underprivileged, has transformed into a thriving industry, emulated by others. The prices of original patchwork quilts and rugs created directly by the Amish have turned these humble textiles into luxury items.

Small squares of wool or calico fabric arranged in strict geometric patterns (as the Amish do not use floral or imaginative designs), frequent use of black as a contrasting color, simplicity, and simultaneously meticulous craftsmanship are the distinguishing features of Amish patchwork quilting.

The wealth of the Amish community (which is quite prosperous) is largely built by the hands of women who gather together on winter evenings around a communal table to sew patchwork quilts while enjoying pleasant conversations.
