is an author who, in recent years, has focused on writing and travelling in Central Asia—a region he first visited more than 40 years ago. He is the author of Travellers in the Great Steppe: From the Papal Envoys to the Russian Revolution and South to the Great Steppe: The Travels of Thomas and Lucy Atkinson in Eastern Kazakhstan, 1847–1852. He also edited The Selected Works of Chokan Valikhanov and a new edition of Lucy Atkinson’s Recollections of Tartar Steppes and Their Inhabitants.
